NYC Photo Editor, Lauren Saldutti, meets Los Angeles magazine/celebrity portrait photographer, Michael Kelley, is the story of A Guy + A Girl Photography.
Meet: Lauren Saldutti & Michael Kelley
We are Michael (a guy) and Lauren (a girl), magazine junkies and camera connoisseurs. Our work has been described as modern simplicity with a twist of whimsy. Inspiration = coffee, road trips, bike rides, bootcamp, indie movies, music…and the occasional jump out of an airplane. Every wedding we photograph is an opportunity to explore a new world of people and relationships and places.
We constantly fly back and forth between NY + LA for weddings … and therefore, consider ourselves locals on both coasts (no travel fees in either city!)
What brought you to the wedding industry?
Together, we started taking pictures of friends’ weddings. Friends of friends asked us to do the same. Then friends of friends of friends asked. It became a thing, and the rest is history.
What is your favorite moment at a wedding?
When the dance floor gets really, really good. Late night!
What is the best part about your job?
Having the opportunity to tell each couple’s unique story. It is crucial for us to get to know them before the wedding so we understand who they are, their personalities + sense of humor, interests, comfort levels, etc…and can bring this out in the photos.
Where do you draw inspiration from when preparing for each wedding?
From everything we know about the couple, their relationship to each other and sometimes what they’ve told us about their families and how they envision their day. And also from the location that they’ve chosen– often that tells us something about the couple and how they see themselves.
Beyond the couple and their wedding, we also draw inspiration from pop culture, classic and modern art, and our bi-coastal lifestyle (Southern California beach life meets NYC hustle + bright lights)!
Share something that is unique to you and/or your business.
Definitely our editorial/magazine backgrounds are unique in the wedding industry. Michael’s 15-year career in commercial photography put many celebrities in front of his lens, including Adam Levine, Hugh Hefner, Elton John, Ice Cube, Sylvester Stallone, Samuel L. Jackson and Steve Jobs to name a few. We met while he was shooting a story for women’s health magazine, where I (Lauren) was a photo editor for six years producing cover shoots + celebrity features.
Additionally, the fact that we divide our time evenly between Los Angeles + New York is a huge part of who we are and the couples who are drawn to our work.
