Betsi Ewing is a wedding and portrait photographer based in New York City and Los Angeles. She creatively documents love on both coasts and a lot of places in between!

Meet: Betsi Ewing

I’ve had a camera in hand for most of my life and have always been interested in photographing people. My shooting style is a blend of artistic and documentary with a keen eye for light and styling. I try to blend into the background, capturing true love and emotion in its most honest form.

I live and work between NYC and LA and am always on the move. It has been a privilege and dream come true traveling the world and documenting real life love stories. I also just launched another project this year called the Oh Stella Studio Collective! We are a small group of documentary photographers and film makers bringing a unique and fresh approach to the wedding world.

What brought you to the wedding industry?

A very happy accident that happened in Upstate New York about 6 years ago. I was living in Brooklyn at the time and looking for any photo jobs out there. I knew I liked photographing people the best but really had no specific direction. I was shooting bands, fashion and all kinds of other random things. I found a gig on craigslist as a “second shooter” for a wedding with JacPfef and the rest was history. I had no idea you could be a full time wedding photographer! In fact I think I had been to about two weddings in my entire life. I loved the combination of journalism, beauty, fashion, styling, it was all such a perfect mix of all my interests and Jackie was filled with all kinds of information and resources she was willing to share with me. I have found the wedding community to be welcoming, friendly, collaborative and supportive.

What is your favorite moment at a wedding?

My favorite moment is the first look! So much anticipation and emotion, sometimes I still get tears in my own eyes when couples start to cry, especially when the guys cry! It always gets me.

What is the best part about your job?

Traveling! I can’t sit still for more than a week. I like constant motion and seeing new things. I feel inspired to keep being creative when my scenery is always changing, it helps keep me motivated and moving forward and pushing myself.

Where do you draw inspiration from when preparing for each wedding?

I’m obsessed with Fashion Gone Rogue and read it daily, it’s the best way to see what’s happening every minute in the world of fashion and editorial photography. I worked for fashion photographers Inez + Vinoodh for a number of years in NYC. They really taught me how to be a confident artist and run a creative business at the same time. They are ever evolving and creating new content, pushing themselves, trying new things, they are just filled with endless ideas and are so inspiring to me. I also love architecture, graphic design, and the obvious go to’s: Pinterest and Instagram. I’m a completely visual person, I love looking at an image or concept and taking away the little parts and pieces I like and making a photo in my own way.

Share something that is unique to you and/or your business.

I think the most unique thing about working with me is how I make my clients feel relaxed and at ease while being photographed. We are always laughing and keeping things feeling natural and fun. The biggest compliment I always receive is hearing how the experience felt like they were hanging out with a friend (me!) and not an intimidating camera crew.
